Recorded live in Mexico City March 7 – 8, 2023
at Pizza Jazz Café and No Somos Nada Distro Cafe

My first performance in Mexico was in Cuernavaca, where Gabriel lives. Juan Castañón, who I had heard on some fantastic recordings, would drive some 8 hours to join the trio of me, Gabriel, and Itzam Cano that night, and stay for the next performance, at Jazzorca in Mexico City. While empathic energies were almost excessive, proper recordings weren’t. So, the goal for my return trip was to document the quartet, live and in the studio.

The first night was at a seemingly unlikely venue, a pizza café in Mexico City, appropriately named Pizza Jazz Café. Like Jazzocra, it is owned and operated by a saxophonist, Adrián Escamilla. The second night would be a return to the recording location of our first Interstellar Nao release on FMR Records, No Somos Nada Distro Café and the inspiration for the track title Regreso a la Nada.

The CD presents 3 extended tracks, introducing theme fragments spontaneously, while freely pursuing individual and shared expression, and expanding the moment. The conceptual approach of guitar and sax was that of 2 equal voices, and not a traditional jazz quartet format. The first two tracks, Demon Chase and El Canto de los Sueños (The Song of Dreams) were from our first night, and the third track, Regreso a la Nada (Return to Nothing) from the second.
