The selections on Blue Spontaneity are drawn from 3 contiguous days of recording in July 2019, Christian Bucher’s seventh year of collaborations in the Philippines with Rick Countryman, with Simon Tan involved for six of them. Due to Simon’s active schedule, the first and last day were a trio format, and the second day was as duo.

“Empathy”, released November 19, 2019 on FMR Records, was produced entirely from the final day, when they had resolved any recording setup questions and had become very efficient with studio time. There was also the reality of it being the last session for the year.  It was productive, and additional material from that session day is included in this release.

Blue Spontaneity begins and ends with material from the duo session. The energy was different that day, and provides a contrast to the other tracks, though both Christian and Rick missed the third perspective Simon adds. They were both very happy with the duo tracks presented here, but didn’t feel the need to include more.

The trio works are both extremely spontaneous, and the closest they come to playing a structured tune (though nothing here is rehearsed, charted out, or discussed...). Simon easily moves with, or in contrast to, any melodic/harmonic direction the sax implies, which gives them the ability to create the illusion of composition, and deconstruction. The ability of Christian and Simon to lock, and unlock, on any tempo and shift in and out of meter gives the freedom of direction Rick can jump off with.
