about

"Here is a trio that knows what it is about and provides direction and soulful fire consistently.”
- Gregory Applegate Edwards

“Unashamedly, joyfully jazz, in the tradition of 1960s Free – and I’m grateful individuals such as Rick keep the idiom much alive, and kicking.” – Julien Palomo, Improvising Beings

I can tell that these two have been working together for a while since they sound quite connected, shadowing each other and completing each other’s lines. This is intense, focused, free jazz at its best. - - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

While Christian and I have performed and recorded together for over a decade, my history with Simon Tan is even longer, as I was fortunate to connect with him during my first few months in the Philippines, back in 2011. Originally we focused on original, structured compositions of mine, which seem to get revised with each performance. Eventually, we would meet up with Christian, and introduce more and more free into our approach.

Simon is a composer and leads his own groups, performing and recording his own originals. The innate sense of composition and melodic phrasing naturally occur, regardless of how free our approach becomes. You can hear this trait in this CD… …rick countryman
