from thewholenote.com review by Ken Waxman

Toyozumi’s constant rumbles and patterns keep up with Countryman who crams as many notes as he can into every bar, pulls his split tones as far as possible without breakage and triple tongues into the stratosphere before ending with crying flutter tonguing. The drummer’s skill using the erhu or spike fiddle is also displayed on a couple of related tracks as he cannily manages to mirror the saxophonist’s circular textural screams and squeaky overblowing with two-stringed slices, even as place-marking drum beats remain.

The Cd was listed in Citizen Jazz Gold Dolphy 2019

From liner notes…

After a day and night filled with obstacles and surprises, none was less than a local dog joining Sabu’s erhu during the performance. Embracing the moment, the barking dog’s spontaneity was incorporated in the music, captured in tracks 2 and 3: “Improvisation with Barking Dog.”

The last performance together in 2018 for Rick Countryman and Sabu Toyozumi would otherwise be a duo, as scheduled. Free improvisation is just as rare in the Philippines as in the rest of the world, but the intimate venues and small crowds always provide their share of enthusiastic support.

The evening was recorded by engineer Alvin Cornista, who shared in the day and night of challenges, having gotten lost on his way to the venue.

The CD starts with “Sol Abstraction”, a tribute to the masterful duets of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali. “Broken Art” is a tribute to the masters Charlie Parker and Eric Dolphy, and “Ballad of Mototeru Takagi” is for the Japanese free improvisational master whom Sabu performed and recorded with for decades.

The closing selection on this CD is “Integrity of Creation”, an extended piece from late in the final set, where the challenges of duo format fuel the creative fires.
